SORDI and Johns Hopkins Analyze Factors Affecting Midwifery Students and Early-Career Retention

SORDI and its partner, Johns Hopkins University, recently concluded a three-day joint analysis meeting for a qualitative midwifery cohort study, drawing on insights from recently graduated midwives and final-year midwifery students. The study assessed the factors affecting midwifery students' and early-career midwives' aspirations, workforce participation, performance, and retention, with particular attention to the experiences of early-career midwives working in conflict-affected areas. It also examined students' perceptions of the learning environment in Somalia, with the aim of producing actionable recommendations for improvement. Through a rigorous joint analysis of the qualitative data, SORDI and Johns Hopkins University identified insights that can inform policy decisions and educational strategies in the midwifery profession. This work reflects SORDI's ongoing commitment, alongside its partners, to strengthening support and resources for midwifery students and early-career midwives in Somalia.
