The Somali Research and Development Institute (SORDI) was honored to participate in the Magan Forum’s high-level panel, where discussions centered on critical investment opportunities between the Somali government and business leaders. The PSPH project, led by SORDI in partnership with DT Global and Swiss TPH, is implementing the SDC-funded PSPH initiative across Somalia and Somaliland. This project serves as a prime example of how Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) can drive meaningful progress in the health sector.
During the discussion, the Project Director for the Private Sector Partnership for Health in Somalia (PSPH) emphasized the importance of collaboration in enhancing development services, especially those vital to the Somali people. He stated, “The private sector accounts for an estimated 60% of the total health expenditure in Somalia, underscoring its significant role in addressing healthcare access and quality gaps. It’s encouraging to see growing interest from the public sector in partnering with private businesses to tackle these challenges. Discussions like these highlight the need for trust, mutual understanding, and ongoing engagement between sectors.”
He also expressed confidence that through continued Public-Private Partnerships (PPP), Somalia can build a more sustainable and effective health system. This approach allows for the early involvement of the private sector in the planning process, leading to better-designed policy reforms and a deeper understanding of market trends, both of which are essential for achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC). Together, we can create a conducive environment for growth and change, ensuring that quality essential healthcare services reach all Somali people. The journey ahead is promising, and he is excited about the progressive projects and collaborations.
The meeting was attended by MPs, members of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Federal Republic of Somalia led by Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre, businessmen led by the Senior Administration of the Somali Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and civil society.
Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre, who attended the meeting, expressed his gratitude to the Magan Forum, stating, “Entrepreneurs are better and more advanced than the government in innovation, financing, and project implementation. The government is responsible for the development of the country and the Somali people. Having the Government and Entrepreneurs together encourages Entrepreneurs and gives them confidence to make tough decisions. The government is committed to creating the environment and confidence to work together so that entrepreneurs can lead the development of the new Somalia.”
The Chairman of the Somali Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Gabaire, added, “It is important for the Government and Entrepreneurs to invest together, taking advantage of the PPP law. Entrepreneurs are very interested in investing with the Government in areas such as Education, Health, Manufacturing, Agriculture, Fisheries, Livestock, Road construction, Somali Airlines, Airports, and Airlines, all of which bring jobs and significant income to the country.”
